Created in 1990, Marseille Espérance is a permanent consultative body in which the religious leaders from Marseille's main communities come together around the first magistrate of the city to affirm, whenever the situation requires it, notably during moments of international tension, their desire to live together in peace and in respect for the specific features of each one of them. During moments of international tension or demonstrations of xenophobia, the city's Catholic, Protestant, Armenian, Greek Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist religious dignitaries, meeting within “Marseille Espérance”, have established a genuine partnership for the city's spiritual, community and cultural strengths.
